How to Get a Permit to Hike Angels Landing

Angels Landing is by far the most popular hike in Zion. Its stunning views coupled with the heart-stopping drop on either side makes it the perfect high adventure location. In recent years the chain portion of the hike, or the last 1/2 mile from Scout Lookout Point to Angels Landing, has become incredibly crowded. Due to safety concerns, the park has implemented a lottery system to make the trail more enjoyable.

Permits for Angels Landing can be obtained in 2 ways.

1- Enter the lottery in advanced.

Every 3 months ie January, April, July, and October; lottery tickets will be released to hike at a future date. This is the best way to ensure you will get to enjoy the beautiful peak. You can apply for up to 6 people, and you will select 7 preferred dates and times with the one you most want ranked 1st. Keep in mind the afternoons in Zion are incredibly hot and dry, so if you want to chance that time in the lottery, be sure to bring extra water and sunscreen.

2- Grab a last minute permit the day before

As is often the case, people’s plans change, so if hiking Angels Landing is on your bucket list, but you didn’t get a permit in time; this may be a great way for you to grab a last minute ticket. Extra permits will be released starting at 12:01am MST, and the lottery will close at 3:00pm, with applicants being informed of the results at 4:00pm that day. The best chance to grab one of these slots is to be logged into your reservation account and ready to go the exact moment they are released. Popular days will be gone quickly.

This is why you bring bear spray to the Grand Tetons

It’s a little nuts, but wanted to share for the first time how we photographed “Dilbert the Duck visits the Grand Tetons” to look the way it did. It’s trickier than you think (even as pretty as the Tetons are)— sometimes it takes a little… well… craziness! October 2021, our caravan passed through pouring rain […]
